Welcome
THE PROBLEM:

Every 17 seconds a child is being bullied!

There is a lot of bullying going on in the world today. We see it on the news, between countries, or between coutry leaders and their people. We see it where we live — at work, traveling to work, and in the businesses we visit to acquire what we need to get by in this world. We see it at home, between parents, between parents and children, and, of course, between our kids themselves.

That, in fact, is where bullying begins — when we're kids. We get bullied, perhaps become bullies ourselves, and never learn how to stop the bully — the bully inside ourselves or the bully that harrasses us.

The winner of a fight is the one who prevents it!
Parents want their children to be safe!

BULLYING IS THE #1 SOCIAL ISSUE FOR CHILDREN'S LIVES TODAY!

What is Martial Arts for Peace®?

Martial Arts for Peace® is a Conflict Education and Character Development Life Skills Program™ for young people and adults that teaches how to cope with bullying and gain the social skills for ethical relationships. Our books and programs are designed to help children and adults deal with the problem of bullying. With these books and programs, you can train young people to resolve conflict before physical violence occurs, giving them the skills and confidence to stop being bullied.

Our pioneering program benefits your commnity in 2 ways.

  1. It immediately helps children cope with a growing social problem — bullying.
  2. As these children grow up, it helps them avoid and reduce the teenage violence that is becoming one of America's, and the world's greatest concerns.

The Intention of the Martial Arts for Peace® Association

The intention of the Martial Arts for Peace® Association is to bring together people and resources that give an intelligent perspective to the Martial Arts and to disseminate thought-provoking and insightful information about its creative aspects through literature, video tapes, classes, workshops and conferences.

Martial Arts for Peace®, a project of the Atrium Society, is a Conflict Education and Character Development Life Skills Program™ for young people and adults that teaches how to cope with conflict and gain the social skills for ethical relationships.

The primary interest of the Martial Arts for Peace® Association is to bring about an understanding of the Martial Arts as a beneficial endeavor people can practice for health and well-being. The current publicized image of the Martial Arts as a violent, military discipline is not a true representation of what is, in essence, a means through which one can come to understand and creatively deal with conflict. The Martial Arts can give the student the opportunity to understand himself. In understanding oneself the student comes in direct contact with the origin of conflict, the foundation of violence. This confrontation with oneself is the primary reason why serious people study the Martial Arts.

The intelligent practice of the Martial Arts can benefit people in a variety of ways. The Martial Arts is not only an excellent form of physical conditioning and an exciting and challenging recreational way to enhance agility and strength through an athletic endeavor, but also an ethical approach to conflict resolution in that it can be an effective way to dispel harmful aggression by developing the confidence to neutralize hostility by non-belligerent, alternative means.

How does Martial Arts for Peace® address the issue of violence?

Martial Arts for Peace® is a comprehensive program that addresses violence first by educating students to the A.B.C.s of Self Defense™ – Avoid, Bargain, Control, thereby giving them the complete tools to cope with conflict through being able to first prevent it and then to resolve it though by nonviolent means, and if all else fails, have the confidence to protect oneself through the humane application of physical self-defense skills. Martial Arts for Peace®, then helps young people understand the basic factors that create conflict by bullying – individually and socially. The program then includes two sections under Character Development that help young people to gain intelligent social skills and an understanding of the underlying factors that prevent peaceful relationships.

How does Martial Arts for Peace® address bullying?

Martial Arts for Peace® addresses bullying by educating students to the A.B.C.s of Self Defense™ – Avoid, Bargain, Control, thereby giving them the tools to cope with being bullied through being able to first prevent it and then to resolve it though by nonviolent means, and if all else fails, have the confidence to protect oneself through the humane application of physical self-defense skills.

Why don't the conventional approaches to resolving conflict work?

Because the conventional approaches do not take into consideration what the primary factors are in creating conflict, that is, in the way humans have been conditioned to think and act. Our programs and books are different from others in that we are trying to address conflict before it begins. To understand and prevent conflict before it occurs is the goal of MAP.

HOW MAP IS DIFFERENT:

IF A CHILD IS TAUGHT ONLY PHYSICAL SELF-DEFENSE, DOES HE OR SHE HAVE THE SKILLS TO AVOID AND RESOLVE CONFLICT BEFORE IT BECOMES A PHYSICAL CONFRONTATION?

In other words, do you think that somehow a young person has the sophisticated skills and presence of mind to understand and avoid conflict and the ability to use clever verbal skills as a means of self-protection (what I would call "Martial Art Mental Self-Defense™") to resolve conflict peacefully if they only practice defending themselves physically? Generally this is not the case. Physical self-defense is just that—and can be employed only when it becomes a physical confrontation. That is not to say that physical skills are not important. On the contrary, they are very important because they give the student the foundation of confidence not to react unnecessarily to a fight or flight situation, to then have the presence of mind to use their first two "lines of defense"—to avoid and resolve conflict by nonphysical means. But physical self-defense is by itself only one small part of a martial art. The first two "lines of defense" need to be learned and practiced equally along with the physical. This is what it means to A.R.M.™ your students, that is, to learn how to:

ARM: AVOID - RESOLVE - MANAGE

Avoid conflict through understanding and being aware of (hence preventing) it

Resolve conflict through nonviolent verbal skills

Manage conflict through humane application of physical skills

Isn't it time that we A.R.M.™ our students so they can have the full set of self-defense skills, mentally and physically, to help them cope with conflict intelligently, effectively?

Conflict Education! or A.R.M.™—which stands for Conflict Avoidance: preventing it; Conflict Resolution: resolving it; and Conflict Management: protecting against it. This complete range of martial arts mental and physical self-defense skills gives students the right tools to cope with conflict successfully—a very needed ability in today's world!

I know that as a parent this is what I would want for my children as all parents naturally want for their children. We want them to be safe and the intelligent way to ensure that safety is to teach them to protect themselves in ways that are non-threatening, leaving as the last resort physical means.

When I speak to children in martial arts schools around the world I don't tell them to A.R.M.™ themselves. They might take it literally. What I tell them to learn is what I call the "3P's" which means:

Prevent a fight from happening by avoiding it

Prepare to use your brain instead of your fists to resolve it

Protect yourself by learning how to fight so you don't have to

But this means that as martial arts instructors we take a more comprehensive view of the martial arts as an education in conflict for our students, especially our young students, so they can understand and resolve conflict nonviolently—which is what the martial arts is really all about. This is our ultimate goal and why the martial arts can play a tremendous role in society in addressing the #1 social issue of violence facing us and our children. Putting aside the tournaments and the sports aspect of the martial arts, which has a place, can we see that these arts were primarily developed to educate and protect ourselves and our children from harm, to find peaceful ways to relate to each other? And can we see that learning these arts in this manner can help us cope not only with the school yard bully but also with the bullying that occurs domestically, socially and internationally?

Dr. Webster-Doyle teachingA MESSAGE FROM DR. WEBSTER-DOYLE:

The martial arts have a tremendously creative potential for teaching young people to resolve conflict peacefully and create fine moral character. Society is crying out for help in these troubled times, and the martial arts can be an intelligent and effective way to prepare our children to cope with today's challenges.

To meet these urgent personal and social challenges of increased violence and the deterioration of ethical values, we need a different education beyond the teaching of academics, one that can teach our children the skills to resolve conflict and build character. Martial Arts for Peace can be this education for peace and social understanding.

If they are to meet this obligation, martial arts schools of the 21st century will need highly trained Martial Arts for Peace Educators who have the necessary skills and resources to prepare their students to cope with these challenges. New Martial Arts for Peace training programs and innovative Martial Arts for Peace curricula will need to be developed in the evolution of these arts from self-defense and competitive sport to the greater mission of a peaceful and spiritual discipline that can address the social and individual ills of humankind.

Martial Arts for Peace® can teach the virtues of compassion, love, wisdom and respect, and the fine qualities that build a strong and honorable character in young people so that they may contribute to creating a more peaceful and gentler world. The original martial arts of peace that became, over time, the arts of war have paradoxically the transformative potential to again be peaceful and healing arts but only with the right vision and the right means to carry out this vision.

We have to begin educating ourselves to be Martial Artists for Peace® to make our dreams - our visions - a reality. It is those visionaries who put their dreams into practice who will elevate the martial arts to their rightful place in the education of our children and in society as a means to resolve conflict, build character, and create peace.

A MESSAGE FROM LINDA LEE CADWELL:

When Bruce Lee began writing articles in the 1960s about his way of martial arts, he was regarded with great skepticism. Thousands of years of martial arts tradition had preceded this young upstart who dared to write.

The classical man is just a bundle of routine, ideas and tradition. When he acts, he is translating every living moment in terms of the old.

Bruce was branded a nonconformist, a rebel, an iconoclast and a heretic. But over the years, as more of his writings were released, it became clear that he was a thinker beyond his time. Now years after his death, many of his ideas, both technical and philosophical, are quoted as the source of modern teaching.

Similarly, Dr. Terrence Webster-Doyle dares to break with tradition by telling young people that to live in a peaceful world they must learn to use their intelligence to break the bonds of fear, hate and violence.

The books of Dr. Terrence Webster-Doyle are the first attempt I have seen to explain to young people and adults the concept of martial arts as a peaceful, nonviolent "way of life" and to give students the tools to accomplish that goal. Too often the study of martial arts is thought of solely as the learning of combative techniques for the purpose of physically conquering another human being. With physical skills as a base, the martial artist develops the confidence to use psychological and sociological self-defense skills which enable him or her to deal with the fears and challenges of everyday life. This is what Dr. Webster-Doyle terms resolving conflict peacefully through nonviolent alternatives.

We don't have to look further than our newspapers and television to know the world is overrun with violence. The attitude that war and cruelty have been going on since time began is the chain that binds us to the Ancient Warrior. The enemy is ritualistic thinking that limits and narrows our vision. As Dr. Webster-Doyle tells us in his writing, rituals can create a framework that imprisons us and blocks awareness of what is really happening. In today's world, the tradition that imprisons us all is sadly a tradition of violence; from the heinous acts of one individual upon another to the global tensions that threaten daily to erupt, human history has conditioned us to accept violence as a means to resolve conflict.

Bruce Lee's interpretation of breaking the influence of conditioning is to gain understanding of self. The goal of Dr. Webster-Doyle's programs is to give young people the physical training that engenders confidence not to react in a confrontational manner, while teaching them to understand the roots of conflict within themselves, so that they may become influential in creating peace. Even a small stone dropped into a pond creates ripples that travel far. Each student that reads Dr. Webster-Doyle's books is fertile ground to absorb the seeds of thought that are planted within their pages. 1 cannot stress enough how important these lessons are for the development of individuals at peace with themselves, for harmonious relationships, for respect between nations, and tolerance between cultures. Please study these books with care and prepared to be enlightened.
